NRCS LA-39 Marsh Island Vegetative Planting

Stream Wetland Services (SWS) contracted with the Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) to grow and install 7,738 bare rot plugs and trade gallon containers of Spartina alterniflora, 1,166 trade gallon containers of Schoenoplectus californicus, and 207 trade gallon containers of Juncus roemerianus. SWS utilized its nursery facility for the plant production phase of this project. The project is located on Marsh Island which is approximately 5 miles across Vermilion Bay and southwest of Cypremort Point, LA. The project consisted of open water planting across degraded wetlands in an attempt to reestablish wetland vegetation. The remote location required the use of several large vessels and airboats to traverse Vermilion Bay and the interior shallow water of Marsh Island. SWS used a crew of 12 men along with four boats to transport and install the vegetation as per the project specifications. The project was completed on schedule and within 10 days.
