The Rockefeller Refuge Vegetative Planting Project
The Rockefeller Refuge Vegetative Planting Project was performed in 2012 on a recently created beneficial use planting platform. SWS provided vegetative planting services in conjunction with the beneficial placement of dredged material. Approximately 30,000 bare root plugs of Spartina alterniflora were installed on 10 foot intervals across the site. SWS utilized vegetative stock from its licensed nursery to transplant the required vegetation as per project specifications. A crew of 15 men was utilized during the installation process. The project was completed in 6 days. After one year’s growth the planting has exceeded monitoring criteria and has provided critical functions and values within the refuge complex.
